(backward verbs) In both Spanish and English, we usually say we are talking about before we say that person is doing. For example: Sally sees a snake! Mi mamá lee un libro. Yo miro la televisión. Jemma is so cute. However, there are some verbs in Spanish that come the subject of the sentence. They are called verbs. gustar interesar encantar doler (o-ue) importar molestar faltar caer bien/mal When you conjugate a backward verb, you need to look at what comes it in order to know which verb ending to use. Nos gustan los perros Le importa la familia. Te encanta el chocolate Me gustas tú So what s with the funny little word that comes in front of the verb? That word is called an, and it has to be there because backward verbs always have two parties involved: a subject and a recipient. The of the verb is determined by the subject, and the in the sentence is determined by the recipient (the indirect object ) Snoopy gives the turkey to Charlie Brown. subject: recipient:
If you want to say specifically who the recipient is, you put that information the pronoun and write the word a in front of it: A nosotros nos gustan los perros. Indirect Object Pronouns A Jemma le encanta nadar. yo tú él, ella, Ud. nosotros vosotros ellos/as, Uds. *BUT, change yo to mí and tú to ti*: A mí me gusta cantar A ti te gusta el fútbol) Here s a backward sentence formula for all of you mathematical thinkers! ( + ) + + Why are gustar and encantar backward verbs? You ve probably heard a million times that Me gusta pizza means I like pizza, right? WRONG!! It actually means You see, PIZZA is the of the sentence, and I is the, or the recipient of the action (being pleasing). In other words, pizza is just being awesome and delicious, and I happen to benefit from its cheesy, saucy, marvelous existence. The same goes for the verb encantar, which actually means, even though we usually translate it as love. A María le encantan los animales. A ti te gusta la música rock? Nos encanta hablar en español! A mí me molesta la tarea. Then, write what the sentence means to you on the blank. A mi mamá le duele la cabeza.
Underline the backward verbs that you encounter in the following reading about Jorge: Hoy es el trece de diciembre, y me quedan tres días de clases antes de ir de vacación a Hawaii. Estoy muy emocionado de ir a Hawaii, pero estoy un poquito triste de no tener clases por dos semanas. A mí me encanta la escuela. Me gustan mis clases y me encanta ver a mis amigos. 2. Qué le encantan a Jorge? 3. Qué te encanta a ti? 4. A Jorge le gustan sus clases? 5. Qué clases te gustan? 6. En qué clase se lee libros que le interesan a Jorge? 7. Qué libros lees tú en la clase de inglés que te gustan? 8. Qué sujeto le importa a Jorge? 9. Qué clase te importa más? Por qué? 10. Qué clase no le gusta a Jorge? 11. Cuándo le duele la cabeza a Jorge? 12. Te duele la cabeza mucho cuando estás en tus clases? 13. Qué le molesta hacer a Jorge? 14. Qué te molesta hacer a ti? 15. A quién le falta interés en el español? 16. En qué te falta interés a ti? 17. Por qué no le interesa estudiar español a Jorge? 18. Por qué te interesa estudiar español?
(backward verbs) In both Spanish and English, we usually say WHO we are talking about before we say WHAT that person is doing. For example: Sally sees a snake! Mi mamá lee un libro. Yo miro la televisión. Jemma is so cute. However, there are some verbs in Spanish that come BEFORE the subject of the sentence. They are called BACKWARD verbs. gustar to be pleasing to ( to like ) interesar to be interesting to encantar to be enchanting to ( to love ) doler (o-ue) to cause pain importar to be important to molestar to annoy faltar to be lacking/non-existent caer bien/mal to be agreeable/disagreeable When you conjugate a backward verb, you need to look at what comes AFTER it in order to know which verb ending to use. Nos gustan los perros Le importa la familia. Te encanta el chocolate Me gustas tú So what s with the funny little word that comes in front of the verb? That word is called an INDIRECT OBJECT PRONOUN, and it has to be there because backward verbs always have two parties involved: a subject and a recipient. The ENDING of the verb is determined by the subject, and the PRONOUN in the sentence is determined by the recipient (the indirect object ). Snoopy gives the turkey to Charlie Brown. subject: recipient:
If you want to say specifically who the recipient is, you put that information BEFORE the pronoun and write the word a in front of it: A nosotros nos gustan los perros. Indirect Object Pronouns A Jemma le encanta nadar. yo me nosotros nos tú te vosotros os él, ella, Ud. le ellos/as, Uds. les *BUT, change yo to mí and tú to ti*: A mí me gusta cantar A ti te gusta el fútbol) Here s a backward sentence formula for all of you mathematical thinkers! ( A + PERSON ) INDIRECT OBJECT PRONOUN + VERB + SUBJECT Why are gustar and encantar backward verbs? You ve probably heard a million times that Me gusta pizza means I like pizza, right? WRONG!! It actually means PIZZA IS PLEASING TO ME. You see, PIZZA is the SUBJECT of the sentence, and I is the INDIRECT OBJECT, or the recipient of the action (being pleasing). In other words, pizza is just being awesome and delicious, and I happen to benefit from its cheesy, saucy, marvelous existence. The same goes for the verb encantar, which actually means TO BE ENCHANTING TO, even though we usually translate it as love. A María le encantan los animales. A ti te gusta la música rock? Nos encanta hablar en español! A mí me molesta la tarea. Then, write what the sentence means to you on the blank. A mi mamá le duele la cabeza.
