Mi futuro en mi mundo Unidad 5 El Pasado Perfecto H.O. #10 The Past Perfect Tense (also referred to as the pluperfect) is also a compound tense and is formed by using two parts: an imperfect form of haber (had) and a past participle: ado for ar verbs and an imperfect form of haber plus -ido for er & ir verbs. (In English, a past participle is the combination of -ed preceded by the helping/auxiliary verb had.) Generally, the past perfect tense expresses an action that had taken place before another past action. Ex: Yo ya había patinado para los cinco años. / I had already skated by 5 years old. Warning: It will sound incomplete if you just say I had skated. *The past perfect tense allows you to say that you had already done something (in the past) prior to another past action or by a specific point in (past) time (ex : by the time I was 5) The cut off point is the past! This compound tense (like the future perfect) requires a qualifier (it needs 2 clauses) Some clause connectors between the two clauses might be: cuando antes que para los (age) Formation: haber +-ado haber + -ido haber + -ido hablar comer vivir *había hablado había comido había vivido habías hablado habías comido habías vivido *había hablado había comido había vivido habíamos hablado habíamos comido habíamos vivido habían hablado habían comido habían vivido *because the yo and él/ella forms take the same conjugations, you must either state the subject pronoun or the subject: Carlos, la señora, etc...
