1 Negatives MAKING A SENTENCE NEGATIVE The most common way to make a sentence negative in Spanish is to place the word no before the verbal expression. Carlos conoce a Maria. Carlos no conoce a Maria. Los soldados luchan mucho. Los soldados no luchan mucho. He terminado. No he terminado. Charles knows Mary. Charles doesn't know Mary. The soldiers fight a great deal. The soldiers don t fight much. I have finished. I haven't finished. If an object pronoun precedes the verb, the negative word no precedes the object pronoun. Lo conozco. No lo conozco. La he visto. No la he visto. I know him. I don't know him. I have seen her. I haven't seen her. Rewrite the following sentences in the negative. 1. María llega hoy. 2. Vamos a esperar aquí. 3. El canta muy bien. 4. El avión sale a las tres. 5. He visto a Roberto. 6. Están construyendo otro pueblo. 7. El niño come demasiado. 8. Ellos quieren que yo vaya. 9. Elena lo sabe. 10. Lo hemos buscado. 1
2 COMMON NEGATIVE WORDS The most common negative words are: nadie nada nunca ni... ni ninguno no one nothing never neither... nor no (used as an adjective) Study the following: Affirmative Alguien esta aquí. Veo a alguien. Tengo algo. Algo está en la mesa. El siempre va. Tienes un diccionario o una novela? Tengo algún dinero. Tiene alguna esperanza. Negative Nadie está aquí. No veo a nadie. No tengo nada. Nada está en la mesa. El nunca va. or El no va nunca. No tienes ni diccionario ni novela? No tengo ningún dinero. No tiene ninguna esperanza. Note that the placement of the negative word in the sentence can vary. The negative word can precede the verb and be used alone or it can be used with no and follow the verb. Unlike English, many negative words can be used in the same sentence. Carlos nunca dice nada a nadie. Charles never says anything to anyone. Nunca va. No va nunca. 2. Rewrite the following sentences in the negative. 1. Maria tiene algo en la mano. 2. Algo está en la mesa. 3. Hay algo en la cocina. 4. Alguien está a la puerta. 5. Allá veo a alguien. 6. Tienes algún problema? 7. El siempre dice la misma cosa. 8. Siempre vamos a las montañas. 2
3 9. Tienes papel o lápiz? 10. Carlos siempre está hablando a alguien de algo. Tampoco Tampoco is the negative word that replaces también. El lo sabe. He knows it. Yo lo sé también. I know it too. El no lo sabe. He doesn't know it. Yo no lo sé tampoco. I don't know it either. Ella trabaja mucho. She works a great deal. Y yo también. So do I. (I do too.) Ella no trabaja mucho. She doesn't work much. Ni yo tampoco. Neither do I. 3. Replace también with tampoco in the following sentences. 1. El es rico también. 2. Ellos también tienen mucho dinero. 3. Maria lo sabe y yo lo sé también. 4. También viene Juan. 5. También está en la reunión Maria. 6. Nosotros lo sabemos también. 7. Ellos comen allí también. Sino Sino is used after a negative sentence to contradict the negative statement. Its English meaning is "but rather." El no es estúpido, sino inteligente. He isn't dumb, but rather intelligent. 4. Follow the model. feo / guapo El no es feo, sino guapo. 1. estúpido / inteligente 2. bajo / alto 3. gordo / flaco 4. pobre / rico 3
4 5. perezoso / ambicioso 6. medico / abogado 7. estúpida / inteligente 8. baja / alta 9. gorda / flaca 10. pobre / rica 11. perezosa / ambiciosa 12. médica / abogada SPECIAL NEGATIVE EXPRESSIONS A peculiar usage of negatives in Spanish is that certain expressions denote a negative meaning even though no negative word is used in the sentence. Study the following examples. En mi vida, he oído tal cosa. En toda la noche, he podido dormir. En el mundo se encuentra tal belleza. (Never) In my life have I heard such a thing. Not all night was I able to sleep. Not in the entire world does one encounter such beauty. 4
