1 Spanish 3V: Winter 2014 Elementary Spanish 3 in online format: Robert Blake, rjblake@ucdavis.edu; Rebecca Conley, mconley@ucdavis.edu Description: Spanish 3V is the second of two Introductory Spanish courses offered in an online format that combines virtual class meetings and group chats with technology-based language instruction. You will attend one virtual class sessions per week (Monday late afternoon, time TBA), one group chat, and also carry out work independently with the Tesoros online textbook and other web-based assignments. The group chats occur online with the instructor two other classmates for 45 minutes each week. The course materials and exercises focus on developing the same array of speaking, listening, reading and writing skills promoted in traditional SPA 3 classes but through an online format. Students are expected to learn to use Spanish for meaningful communication in realistic situations, develop an understanding of basic grammatical concepts, and appreciate the various cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. Required Materials: Course Web pages All course materials can be found online at Use your <username> and <secure password> from your own campus. You will need microphone and headphones to participate in class chats. Keep in mind that most laptops now come with internal microphones. Grading Final 20% Quizzes 25% Video chats 20% Speaking Activities 15% Listening Activities 10% Writing Activities 10% Time Requirements Students should plan to spend at least 10 hours a week working with the online materials in the online textbook Tesoros and other assignments. It s best to spread these hours out over the course of the week; cramming doesn t work with language learning. Remember that although this is an online course, it is still a 5-unit course.
2 Online synchronous meetings: You must attend the online virtual class meeting one a week and the chat sessions regularly in order to practice speaking Spanish. Your weekly small group video chat meetings are a vital component in your language development and accordingly for your overall success in the course. You will be asked to give your instructor a preferred chat time and you will be paired with one-two other students in the course with whom you will meet for chat throughout the quarter Tentative Class Schedule: * Please note: All homework and assignments will be posted on the course website under "Modules". Please refer to that on a daily basis, along with reading the "Announcements", to find out which assignments are due when.
